About this tool

This free URL slug generator converts any article title, product name, or phrase into a clean, SEO-friendly URL slug. It normalizes diacritics (converting accented letters like é, ö, ü to their ASCII equivalents), strips punctuation, replaces spaces with your chosen separator (hyphen, underscore, or none), and optionally strips common English stop words for a tighter result. Truncation at a maximum length clips cleanly at a word boundary.

URL slugs are the human-readable portion of a URL that identifies a specific page — in "example.com/blog/how-to-make-coffee", the slug is "how-to-make-coffee". Good slugs are short (under 60 characters is recommended), use hyphens rather than underscores (Google treats hyphens as word separators; underscores are treated as word joiners), contain target keywords, and are entirely lowercase.

SEO best practices for URL slugs: include 1–3 target keywords and remove filler words ("the", "a", "and", "of", "to"). Avoid dates in slugs unless temporal relevance is the point. Avoid numbers that will change (like version numbers). Avoid URL-encoded characters (%20, %2C) by encoding them before publishing. Once a URL is live and has inbound links, avoid changing it — if you must, set up a 301 permanent redirect from the old slug to the new one.

This tool handles the most common slug generation scenarios but cannot automatically identify which words in your title are the most important keywords. That editorial judgment must be made by you. Use the generated slug as a starting point, then trim it to include only the core keywords that accurately describe the page content.
