A common question is whether to tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount. Either is acceptable — tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is more precise, but most people tip on the full bill for convenience. On a $60 pre-tax bill with 8% tax, the difference between 20% pre-tax ($12) and 20% post-tax ($12.96) is less than $1.
When splitting a bill with friends, the fairest approach is to include the tip in the split so everyone contributes equally. This calculator handles that automatically — just set the number of people and every person sees the same rounded amount.
