Fuel Cost Calculator
Estimate road trip gas cost from distance, MPG and fuel price
About this tool
This free fuel cost calculator estimates the total gas expense for any road trip. Enter your trip distance, your vehicle's fuel efficiency (MPG or L/100km), and the current gas price — the calculator instantly shows total fuel used and the total cost. Switch between US imperial (miles and gallons) and metric (kilometers and liters) with one click.
Road trip planning is one of the most popular uses. Before driving 600 miles in a car that gets 30 MPG, you want to know that you'll burn 20 gallons and spend roughly $70 at $3.50/gallon. That helps with budgeting for gas stops, choosing between driving and flying, or comparing routes of different distances.
Fleet managers, delivery drivers, and rideshare workers also use fuel cost calculators to track vehicle expenses and set per-mile reimbursement rates. The IRS standard mileage rate for 2024 is 67 cents per mile for business driving — knowing your actual fuel cost per mile helps you see how much of that covers fuel vs. depreciation and maintenance.
To find your vehicle's MPG, divide the miles driven by the gallons used on a full-to-full fill-up cycle. Most modern cars show average MPG on the dashboard. For electric vehicles, use the MPGe equivalent found on the EPA's fueleconomy.gov database.
