This free hours and minutes calculator lets you add or subtract multiple time durations and see the result in both HH:MM format and decimal hours. It is the fastest way to total up time entries without converting everything to minutes by hand.
Common uses include adding up hours worked across multiple shifts before submitting a timesheet, totaling the duration of several video files or podcast episodes, calculating how long a road trip takes with multiple legs, or adding study sessions to hit a target number of hours. Decimal hours (e.g. 2.5 hours = 2 hours 30 minutes) are often needed for billing, payroll software, and spreadsheet calculations.
Time arithmetic is trickier than regular math because it uses base-60 (60 seconds in a minute, 60 minutes in an hour) rather than base-10. Adding 1:45 and 1:30 gives 3:15, not 2:75 — this calculator handles all that automatically. It also carries over correctly when minutes exceed 60 or you subtract more than the total.
