Grade Calculator
Find the exam grade you need to reach your target final grade
About this tool
This free grade calculator answers one of the most common student questions: what do I need on my final exam to get the grade I want? Enter your current grade, the percentage weight of the final exam, and your target final grade — the calculator instantly solves for the minimum exam score you need.
The formula is: required score = (target grade − current grade × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight. For example, if you have an 82% average, the final is worth 30%, and you want a 90%, you need: (90 − 82 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = (90 − 57.4) ÷ 0.30 = 108.7 — which tells you it is mathematically impossible without extra credit. That clarity is exactly what this tool provides.
Use it before final exam season to set realistic goals. If the required score is above 100%, you know to negotiate extra credit or accept a lower target. If it is below your typical performance, you can go into the exam with confidence. Teachers and professors can also use it to verify grade thresholds before setting exam difficulty.
Final exam weight varies widely by course — some professors weigh finals at 20%, others at 50%. Always check your syllabus for the exact percentage and use that number here for accurate results.
