QR codes (Quick Response codes) were invented by Denso Wave in Japan in 1994 for tracking automotive parts. Today they are used everywhere: restaurant menus (especially post-COVID), payment systems (Venmo, PayPal, Alipay, Google Pay), contactless check-in, app download campaigns, event tickets, product authentication, and marketing campaigns linking print materials to digital content.
This generator uses medium error correction (level M), which allows the code to remain scannable even if up to 15% of it is damaged or obscured. Error correction is what allows QR codes with logos embedded in the center to still scan correctly — the redundant data compensates for the obscured area. Higher error correction (level H, up to 30%) produces a denser, larger code that's more robust but requires a larger print size to scan reliably.
Best practices: always test scan your QR code before printing at scale. The minimum readable print size is approximately 2 cm × 2 cm (0.75 in) for a close-range scan; use at least 3–4 cm for general signage. Maintain a clear white margin ("quiet zone") of at least 4 modules around the code. Dark modules on light background scan most reliably — avoid very low contrast between foreground and background.
