Fortune cookies are a staple of Chinese-American restaurant dining — though their origin is more complex than commonly believed. Modern food historians trace them to Japanese immigrant bakers in San Francisco and Los Angeles in the early 20th century (particularly Makoto Hagiwara at the Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park), not to China. They became widely associated with Chinese restaurants in the US after WWII, largely because Japanese-American bakers were unable to operate during internment and Chinese bakeries took over production.

The slips of paper inside fortune cookies traditionally contain aphorisms, proverbs, or motivational sayings (the "fortune"), often followed by lucky numbers and sometimes a Chinese vocabulary word. The fortunes in this generator are original, gently inspirational messages in the spirit of the classic fortune cookie format — meant to be uplifting, mildly philosophical, and universally applicable.

Fortune cookies are also a form of ambient inspiration — a tiny moment of pause and reflection built into the ritual of finishing a meal. Some people keep fortunes they find meaningful, sticking them on their monitor or in their wallet. Digital fortune cookies serve the same function: a brief, randomized prompt for reflection during a break, at the start of a workday, or whenever you need a small boost of perspective.
