Grade point average is a weighted mean, and the whole thing follows from one formula. The confusion comes from everything layered on top: weighted versus unweighted scales, credit hours, plus/minus grades, and the fact that colleges frequently recalculate the number rather than using the one printed on your transcript.

The formula

GPA = (sum of grade points × credits) ÷ (total credits)

Each letter grade maps to a number of grade points. Multiply each by the credit value of the course, add those products, and divide by the total credits. The division by credits is what makes it a weighted mean — a five-credit course moves your GPA more than a one-credit course.

The standard 4.0 scale

Institutions vary. Some award 4.3 for an A+, many do not use plus/minus at all, and the percentage bands shift from school to school. Your registrar's published scale is the one that counts.

A worked example

Say a semester looks like this:

Total grade points: 14.8 + 12.0 + 12.0 + 9.9 + 2.3 = 51.0. Total credits: 4 + 4 + 3 + 3 + 1 = 15.

51.0 ÷ 15 = 3.40 GPA.

Notice how little the C+ hurt. It was a one-credit course, so it carried one fifteenth of the weight. The same C+ in the four-credit calculus slot would have pulled the average down to 3.21. This is the single most useful thing to understand about GPA: credit weight matters as much as the grade. The GPA calculator does this arithmetic across any number of courses.

Weighted vs unweighted

Unweighted GPA treats every course identically and caps at 4.0. An A in remedial maths and an A in AP Calculus are both 4.0.

Weighted GPA adds points for course difficulty, which is why students report GPAs above 4.0. The typical scheme:

  • Standard courses: no adjustment — A = 4.0
  • Honors: +0.5 — A = 4.5
  • AP / IB / dual enrolment: +1.0 — A = 5.0

So a student taking all AP courses and earning straight As has a 5.0 weighted GPA and a 4.0 unweighted one. Both describe the same transcript.

There is no national standard here. Some districts weight only AP, some cap the weighted scale at 4.5, some do not weight at all. This is precisely why comparing weighted GPAs between schools is close to meaningless.

What colleges actually do with it

Because weighting schemes are inconsistent, many admissions offices recalculate GPA themselves to get a comparable number. Common adjustments:

  • Stripping the weighting back to an unweighted 4.0 scale
  • Counting only core academic subjects — English, maths, science, social studies, foreign language — and dropping PE, health and electives
  • Ignoring ninth grade in some cases
  • Removing plus/minus distinctions

The practical consequence: the number on your transcript is not necessarily the number being compared against other applicants. It also means course rigour is assessed separately from GPA. Admissions readers look at the transcript itself to see whether you took the demanding courses available to you, so a 3.8 with four APs generally reads better than a 4.0 with none.

What counts as a good GPA

Entirely dependent on context, but rough conventions:

  • 3.9–4.0 unweighted — competitive at highly selective institutions
  • 3.5–3.8 — strong; comfortable at most selective schools
  • 3.0–3.5 — solid; the range most universities admit from
  • 2.0–3.0 — meets graduation and many admission requirements
  • Below 2.0 — usually triggers academic probation

Common thresholds worth knowing: most institutions require a 2.0 cumulative GPA to graduate, Latin honours typically begin around 3.5 (cum laude), 3.7 (magna) and 3.9 (summa), and many scholarships set a 3.0 or 3.5 floor for renewal.

Raising a GPA gets harder over time

This surprises people, and it is pure arithmetic. GPA is a mean over all credits attempted, so each new semester is a smaller fraction of the total.

A student with 15 credits at 3.0 who earns a 4.0 semester of 15 credits moves to 3.50 — a jump of half a point. The same 4.0 semester for a student with 90 credits at 3.0 moves them to only 3.14.

The implication is that early grades matter disproportionately, and that recovering a low GPA late requires many more credits than most students expect. If you need a specific final grade in a single course to hit a target, the grade calculator works backwards from the target to the exam score required.

Retakes, pass/fail and withdrawals

  • Retakes: policies differ sharply. Some schools replace the original grade entirely, some average the two, and some keep both on the transcript while counting only the higher one. Check before assuming a retake erases a failure.
  • Pass/fail: a pass usually carries credit but no grade points, so it is excluded from the GPA calculation entirely. A fail often does count as 0.0.
  • Withdrawals: a W typically does not affect GPA, but it appears on the transcript and too many can raise questions.
  • Transfer credits: frequently transfer as credit without grade points, meaning they count toward your degree but not your GPA.

A closing caveat

Every scale, threshold and weighting convention above is a common pattern, not a rule. Institutions genuinely differ, and the authority for your GPA is your own registrar's published policy. Use these figures to understand the mechanics — then check the specifics with your school before making a decision that depends on them.
