Women's sizes vary significantly across systems. A US women's size 8 is approximately a UK size 12 and an EU size 40. The UK uses numeric sizing that runs 4 higher than US, while EU sizing uses a different scale based on body measurements in centimeters. French sizing adds 36 to the UK size. Italian and German sizing differs slightly too, which is why the brand's own size chart always takes precedence over a generic converter.
Men's sizing is somewhat more standardized: S/M/L/XL letter sizes correspond to similar body measurements internationally, though numeric trouser sizes (e.g. 32x30 waist×inseam) are the most reliable for bottoms. European suit sizes use a different scale: a US/UK 40 jacket is typically an EU 50.
Important caveat: clothing sizes are not standardized. The same EU 38 will fit differently at Zara, H&M, and a premium brand due to different cut and fit philosophies (vanity sizing, slim-fit vs. relaxed).
