About this tool

This free volume converter handles liters, milliliters, US gallons, Imperial (UK) gallons, US fluid ounces, Imperial fluid ounces, cups, pints, and quarts. Type any value and every other unit updates instantly. It is essential when following international recipes, purchasing fuel abroad, or comparing beverage sizes across countries.

A critical distinction: the US gallon and the Imperial (UK) gallon are different sizes. 1 US gallon = 3.78541 liters; 1 Imperial gallon = 4.54609 liters — about 20% larger. Similarly, 1 US fluid ounce = 29.5735 ml while 1 Imperial fluid ounce = 28.4131 ml. This matters when following British recipes in the US or vice versa, and when buying fuel: a US gas station's price per gallon looks cheaper than a UK price per litre even before the exchange rate.

Common uses: brewing beer or kombucha (scaling a recipe from US gallons to liters for a metric fermenter), cooking with a European recipe that uses milliliters while your measuring cups show fluid ounces, comparing fuel economy figures (mpg vs L/100km), and chemistry or science work that requires precise volume conversions between SI and non-SI units.

For baking where ingredient volume must be converted to weight, use the Cooking Measurements Converter instead — it factors in ingredient density to give accurate gram-to-cup conversions for flour, sugar, butter, and more.
