Time Difference Calculator
Hours and minutes between any two clock times, with pay calc
About this tool
This free time difference calculator tells you exactly how many hours and minutes separate two clock times. It handles overnight shifts (where end time is earlier than start time), optional break deductions, and — if you enter an hourly rate — calculates your estimated gross pay for the shift. Results appear in both HH:MM format and as a decimal number of hours.
Payroll and timekeeping are the most common uses. Hourly workers who need to verify their hours before submitting a timesheet can enter their exact in/out times and break length to confirm the total. Employers and managers use it to audit timecards quickly. Freelancers use decimal hours for billing clients at an agreed hourly rate — a 7 hour 45 minute session billed at $85/hour = 7.75 × $85 = $658.75.
The calculator correctly handles spans that cross midnight. If you started at 10:30 PM and ended at 6:15 AM, that is a 7 hour 45 minute shift — not a negative number. Just enter the start and end times and the tool detects the overnight crossing automatically.
Note that this tool calculates clock-time duration, not scheduled hours. It does not account for time zone differences (use the Time Zone Converter for that) or daylight saving transitions. For a full weekly hours total with per-day entries, the Work Hours Calculator is the better tool.
