The day of the week for any date can be calculated using Zeller's congruence or the Doomsday algorithm, but doing it mentally is tricky. The Gregorian calendar follows a 400-year cycle that repeats exactly, which is why this calculation works reliably for any date from the adoption of the Gregorian calendar onward. Dates before October 15, 1582 used the Julian calendar and require a different calculation.
Fun uses: finding out if your birthday is always on a particular day this year, checking what day of the week a famous historical event occurred (D-Day was a Tuesday, the Moon landing was a Sunday), verifying whether a specific future date falls on a weekend, or settling a trivia question about the day of a major cultural moment.
